A one-day Petra visit works best when Petra itself owns the day. Sleeping in Wadi Musa removes a long same-morning transfer and lets you enter early, when the walking is cooler and the site is quieter.

The Treasury is the famous reveal, but the official Main Trail continues through the Street of Facades and theatre toward the Royal Tombs, Colonnaded Street and Qasr al-Bint. Build the morning around the whole ancient city rather than spending most of it at one façade.
Midday decision

If your energy, weather and time are good, continue toward Ad-Deir (the Monastery). If not, use the afternoon for the Royal Tombs, temples, churches and quieter archaeological areas. A one-day plan becomes worse when a major climb is added after the schedule is already slipping.
Late afternoon

Petra is physically large, and the exit still requires real walking. Keep enough time and energy for the return rather than timing the day only around the last monument you want to photograph.

If the official programme is running on your date and you still have energy, Petra by Night can be a separate evening experience. Treat it as atmosphere rather than a replacement for seeing the archaeological city in daylight.

Often yes, but it should be the main extra objective after the core route, not one of several long climbs. Heat, walking speed and how much time you spend in the city all matter.
It is possible, but a Wadi Musa overnight gives Petra more of the day and removes a long transfer from the same schedule. Use a day tour from Amman when your wider itinerary truly cannot include an overnight.
